You are truly in the dilemma of every small under capitalized business or company. Currently I am working with three companies in similar situation. Their are no easy solutions, you are in the middle of a birth process. You must examine the following possibilities: 1) using your financial forecasting model look for outside capital (government, extended family, friends, acquaintances, and local investment bankers). Say to them “I am looking for someone to invest in my business, do you know anyone that may be interested.” Do not put direct pressure on your own family. You want this to be a win-win situation. I do not believe a person can be a committed to their family and to birthing a business simultaneously. You must choose one or the other. I do not know your personal situation, but if you choose the business, 2) then release, let go of one or more of your employees. I know this seems bizarre, but you must get to a positive cash flow otherwise the business will be stillborn. I remember working 100 years a week (Yes a 100), including Saturday’s and Sunday’s to birth my businesses, as I had no capital. This means that for several years I sacrificed my family. 3) Do not over commit. I have some expertise in the solar business though I do not know the niche your company is in. Do not overcommit or work unless you have established an accounts receivable lender. A profitable growing company can die because of the lack of cash. You may consider or try to find out if any of your present employees are willing to take a cut in salary for a partial ownership of the business. (Phantom stock). Start talking to local bankers now even if they cannot give you financing at your present size. You must develop a relationship so that at the appropriate time they can be your advocate to their superiors and assist you in funding. 4) Wait wait wait, remember the three T's for birthing a business. It takes Time, Toughness and Tenacity! 5) Continue even into bankruptcy if necessary, the experience you will have won whether successful or not is priceless. EVEN PETER DRUCKER COULD NOT TEACH YOU THIS IN SCHOOL YOUR EXPERIENCES CAN NOPT BE TAUGHT VICAREOUSLY. IT CAN ONLY BE EXPERIENCED. 6) Remember you are in the flow of the great MOTHER trust the process (that is the 4th T (Trust), g-d bless. P.S. Look for a local mentor who is a successful businessperson, ask for help and keep reaching out. |
